What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a marathon software and hardware solution creation and presentation event.

Major reasons... promoting STEM learning and career pathways, and getting SJSIP know in southern New Jersey as the "go-to" place for STEM talent. At hackSJSIP, you can look forward to amazing guest speakers, helpful workshops, skilled mentors, and, of course, fun games and food.

What are the Rules of Engagement?

This hackSJSIP event is targeted to high school students, grades 9 - 12. While students must be registered to participate, the public is invited to attend.

Each team of five students must be from the same high school and must be accompanied by a teacher chaperone.

What Can I Win?

We will provide each team of 5 high school students with the following hardware,  access to the Internet, and cloud storage:

  • Raspberry Pis + kits + Display Screens
  • Oculus Rifts
  • Sparkcore
  • Servos, Motors and Gears
  • Soldering irons
  • Wire cutters, strippers, pliers
  • ...and more!

The hackSJSIP event starts with a continental breakfast at 6:45 AM to 7:45 AM, and the action packed day ends with early dinner and awards at 6:00 PM on Saturday, November 3, 2018. Visit our website for detailed schedule.

You must bring your school student ID for registration, and you will need your laptop and charger for hacking.

No cost to attend. We will provide all the food and fun packed day.

We will provide transportation from two central locations to the Salem campus of Salem Community College from 6:00 AM - 7:45 AM, and from 6:15 PM - 7:30 PM on November 3, 2018.

The hackSJSIP is all about STEM learning, having fun, and developing innovative solutions to real-life problems. That being said, winners will be selected by a panel of judges based on evaluation criteria such as technical difficulty, creativity, originality, benefits, social impact, business opportunity, and soft skills such as group dynamics, quality of presentation, and organization of presentation.
